MANSFIELD – Wednesday night's women's basketball game at First Citizens Community Bank Court in Decker Gymnasium ended with the score columns reading 64-27, but the matchup between the Mansfield Mountaineers and the Lock Haven Bald Eagles was cut short due to a power outage.
Â
The game started off with a monstrous 13-2 first quarter for Lock Haven, which escalated into a 27 point outburst heading into halftime. Twice the Bald Eagles held the Mounties to just two points in a quarter, bookending the middle quarters of play. Mansfield scored the first points of the game, but a combination of aggressive defensive schemes from LHU and a poor shooting performance from Mansfield led to an early deficit.  Following MU's opening bucket, the Bald Eagles held the Mounties scoreless until the start of the second quarter.
Â
Three players scored in double figures for LHU. Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh had a game-high 13 points, while Taylor Leidy and Ahnera Parker followed suit with 12 and 11 points respectively. Rileigh Devine added seven points, five rebounds, and five assists in a very well-balanced effort. Bink Redman led all players with 13 rebounds in the Bald Eagles' win.
Â
Mansfield was led by
Ellie Thompson. The freshman was the only player to score in double digits on the Mounties' side of things. She also added six rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Erin Gibbons,
Sydney Reed, and
Mia Leonard were the only other Mansfield players to score, combining for the remaining 15 points of offense. Leonard's 10 rebound performance gives the sophomore 15 consecutive games this season with five or more rebounds. With five more blocks, the center also climbed closer to second place on the single-season blocks mark. That spot is currently held by Lisa Sherman who had 56 blocks in the 1987-88 season. Leonard is just two blocks away from tying Sherman on the list.
Â
In a tough night of shooting from the field for both teams, MU was outrebounded 55-32. The Bald Eagles and Mounties both had over 17 turnovers, but it was the Bald Eagles who were able to convert on the other end, scoring 26 points in the paint and 15 points off of turnovers.
Â
The Mounties were only outscored by one point in a competitive third quarter, but it was a strange fourth quarter that will be remembered most vividly.
Â
After another tough start in the final stanza of the game, an unusual series of events followed. The lights and all power suddenly went out at Decker Gymnasium due to a power outage affecting several areas in the Mansfield borough. The game had to be called by game officials after the power outage left the building without lights for nearly 30 minutes, the resulting final score being 64-27.
Â
Up next, the Mountaineers travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday to take on the Warriors at 1 p.m.
