Mounties' Explosive Offense Not Enough Against Redhawks

Story Links

MANSFIELD – Juniors Garrett Cook and Taylor Sweeney combined for 11 3-pointers to uplift the Mansfield University men's basketball team to a 3-point lead with seconds remaining in regulation, but Roberts Wesleyan College netted the game-tying three at the buzzer and connected for two more in overtime to sneak out of Decker Gymnasium with a 109-99 non-conference victory in front of an electric crowd on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

The Mounties (2-5 overall) fought off multiple Redhawks' (2-6 overall) comeback attempts in the second half and a perfect trip to the line by junior Christian Simmons gave Mansfield a 3-point advantage with nine seconds remaining. A missed 3-pointer trickled off a Mountaineer defender, giving Roberts Wesleyan a catch and shoot opportunity with seconds left on the scoreboard. Shane Fanning drilled a trifecta as time expired to send the game into overtime.

The Redhawks connected on back-to-back trifectas to open up the extra frame and outscored the Mounties, 21-11 in the period.

The Mountie offense featured five players in double-figures as they were one point shy of reaching the century mark for the second time this season. Sweeney netted a season-high 18 points, all coming from behind the arch as he was 6-of-9 from deep. Cook nearly matched that trifecta total, netting five triples of his own on nine attempts, finishing with 19 points and four rebounds.

Senior Tyler Moffe filled up the stat sheet, dropping 11 points, dishing out five assists and pulling in five rebounds. Simmons netted a team-high seven field goals to finish with a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double. Senior Trevor English notched his fifth double-double in a row with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mountaineers built a 17-point lead in the first period and led 36-17 after a dunk by freshman Jaz Farrell. The Redhawks cut the deficit to single-digits, 40-32 at the 2:37 mark, but Mansfield closed out the half on a 9-1 run to head into the break leading, 49-33.

After going 10-of-14 from 3-point range in the first half, Mansfield cooled down and was 2-of-5 the rest of the way. Roberts Wesleyan, however, matched their first-half total with seven more triples and made up the scoring difference at the foul line as they were 12-of-17 in the second half and 9-of-10 in overtime to seal the victory.

Reggie Clark poured in a game-high 36 points for the Redhawks on 5-of-10 shooting from three and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Amari Lee added 23 points and Shane Fanning poured in 16 to go with his overtime-clinching trifecta.

The Mounties get back to PSAC action on Saturday, Dec. 7 when they host sixth-ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Military Appreciation Day inside Decker Gymnasium.
