NYACK, N.Y. – The Mansfield University women's basketball team fell on the road to Nyack College, 70-57 in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
Sophomore Sydney Reed led the Mountaineer offense with 12 points, while recording two rebounds and dishing out three assists. Junior Chelsea Cover netted 10 points and dished out two assists and freshman Alivia Paeglow netted 10 points off the bench to mark the third Mountie in double-figures.
The Mounties (2-2 overall) took a 12-8 lead into the second quarter thanks to four early points from Cover and defense that limited the Warriors (1-1 overall) to 2-of-15 shooting from the floor. The Mounties continued their momentum into the second quarter and a layup by Paeglow gave the Mounties their largest lead of the night, 17-8 with 8:35 to go.
However, the Warriors early offensive struggles turned around and they closed out the half on an 18-7 run to take their first lead since early in the first.
The Mounties battled back and a pair of free throws by freshman Jasmine Perez helped Mansfield regain the lead, 41-40 with 2:32 left in the third. However, an offensive put-back on the ensuing possession gave the advantage back to Nyack – who shot over 50 percent the rest of the game – and the Mounties could not recover.Â
Jasmine Cruse registered game-highs with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Kyla Given added 12 points and eight boards to lead the Warriors.
The Mounties look to rebound as they open up PSAC play starting Saturday, Nov. 23 when they tip-off against Seton Hill at 1:30 p.m.
