NYACK, N.Y. – Senior
Jahmir Green scored a career-high 20 points, including a triple to tie the game late in the second half, but Nyack College used a late run to escape Bowman Gymnasium with a 91-87 non-conference victory on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The Mounties (1-3 overall) shot 45 percent from the floor and outshot the Warriors, 10-2, at the line to head into the break with a 47-40 advantage. Mansfield continued to hold off Nyack and a trifecta from
Garrett Cook expanded the lead to double-digits at the 14:30 mark in the second period.
Nyack (3-2 overall), though, slowly chipped away at the deficit and a layup with eight minutes remaining knotted the game at 68. The final countdown showcased seven lead changes and six ties, with a trifecta by Green knotting the score for a final time at 82 with 2:40 to go.
The Warriors scored on the ensuing possession and closed out the contest with a 9-5 run to secure the victory.
Green knocked down four free-throws and two trifectas on his way to 20 points.
Christian Simmons poured in 21 points and pulled in six rebounds and
Trevor English added a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Tyler Moffe netted a season-high 14 points and dished out a game-high eight helpers, while
Taylor Sweeney scored 10 points off the bench.
In the first half, the Mounties jumped out to an 8-0 advantage over the opening three minutes before the Warriors scored their first basket. The Mounties led by as much as nine, but the Warriors hung around and a 5-0 run at the 6:09 mark tied the score at 27. However, the Mounties exploded on a 14-1 run over the next three minutes to regain the lead and ultimately head into the break with a 47-40 advantage. Simmons (13), English (11) and Green (10) each scored in double-figures to lead the Mounties in the first half.
Joel Bailey scored a game-high 27 points for the Warriors.
The Mounties are back in action this weekend when they head to Greensburg, Pa. for a pair of PSAC games hosted by Seton Hill University. Mansfield battles the Griffins at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 before taking on California University of Pennsylvania on 3 p.m. on Sunday. Â
