GREENSBURG, Pa. – Seniors
Tyler Moffe and
Trevor English each netted over 20 points to highlight a red-hot Mansfield University men's basketball offense, which shot over 50 percent from the floor on their way to a 87-73 PSAC-opening victory on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 23.
The Mounties played very efficient basketball, shooting 51 percent (34-of-67) from the field while committing a season-low seven turnovers. Mansfield also dished out a season-high 17 assists as a team and shot 71 percent (15-of-21) from the line.
English notched his third straight double-double, finishing with 26 points and 14 rebounds on 12-of-22 shooting. Moffe broke-out for 23 points (9-of-19), adding seven rebounds and four helpers.
Christian Simmons was perfect from the free-throw line (7-of-7) on his way to 15 points and five rebounds and
Jahmir Green added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Mounties (2-3, 1-0 PSAC) came out of the break holding a 47-33 advantage thanks to hot shooting (21-of-41) while holding the Griffins (1-2, 0-1 PSAC) to just 13 field goals. Mansfield opened the game on a 9-0 run through two minutes and led by as much as 18, 32-14 with seven minutes to go. The Griffins could never cut the deficit to single-figures and the Mounties held Seton Hill to their season-low for first-half points. Moffe (16 points, four rebounds) and English (14 points, seven rebounds) each scored in double-figures, while Green locked down the back court with three steals.
The second half featured an even 40-40 score, but the early Mountie lead was insurmountable for the Griffins. English eclipsed the 20-point mark by pouring in 12 more points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and Simmons went 7-of-7 at the line, totaling 13 points.
Jimmy Moon led the Griffins' offense with 23 points and seven rebounds while going 9-of-14 shooting from the field. Nathan Davis added 20 points and five rebounds.
The Mounties are back in action tomorrow, Nov. 24 when they head to California University of Pennsylvania for a PSAC contest at 3 p.m.
