MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University women's basketball team were led by three players in double-figures as they took down Frostburg State University, 63-52 in non-conference action on Friday night, Nov. 15 inside Decker Gymnasium.
Freshmen Jasmine Hilton led the Mounties (2-1) with 15 points and four rebounds. Kira Merritt was efficient for the Mountie's offense, netting 4-of-4 trifectas for a total of 12 points, three rebounds and two assists. Chelsea Cover recorded 10 points, three rebounds and two assists while junior Paige Whitfield added nine points, four rebounds and five assists in the victory.
The Mountie's offense came alive early in the opening minutes of the first half. The first four minutes saw Merritt drain three of her four three-pointers for the Mounties to take a 9-4 lead. However, the Bobcats were able to claw their way back to knot the score at 19 with four minutes remaining in the half.
The Mounties shot 61 percent (8-of-13) from the floor in the third quarter to lead by as much as 20. The Mounties (43 percent) outshot the Bobcats (33 percent) from the field in the contest while also shooting an impressive 43 percent from beyond the arch. Although the Bobcats outrebounded the Mountaineers 38-32, Mansfield pulled in 22 defensive rebounds to Frostburg's 18, while holding the Bobcats to nine percent shooting (2-of-21) from 3-point range.
Frostburg's offense put the Mountaineer defense on their heels late in the game, cutting the Mounties lead from 20 to start the 4th quarter to just seven with two minutes remaining. Sydney Reed (nine points, three rebounds, one assist) had a steal in the final minute of play leading to a three-point basket to help hold off the Bobcats.
The Bobcats were led by Jada Holland (12 points, five rebounds, one assist), Amanda Emory (11 points, seven rebounds) and Morgan Dombroski (six points, four rebounds, five assists).
The Mounties are back on the road next Tuesday, Nov. 19 when they face Nyack College in a non-conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
