Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hilton Powers Mounties Past Senators, 73-70

INDIANA, Pa. – In just her second game with the Mansfield University women's basketball team, freshman guard Jasmine Hilton contributed 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Mounties to a 73-70 win over Davis & Elkins College on the final day of the IUP Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Hilton led four Mounties in double-figures, shooting 10-of-15 from the field and added a team-high six rebounds in 35 minutes of work. Paige Whitfield (13 points) reached double-digits for the second straight game and was 4-of-4 from the foul line. Chelsea Cover netted 11 points and pulled in five rebounds while also shooting 6-of-8 at the free-throw line. Kira Merritt rounded out a strong performance from the Mountie starting five with eight points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Mounties (1-1 overall) took an early 9-0 lead over the first 4:42 of the game with points from Hilton, Merritt and Whitfield. The Senators (0-2 overall) responded over the next few minutes with a 9-0 run of their own to even the game at nine. A Merritt 3-pointer with 3:38 left in the first quarter regained the momentum and allowed the Mounties to control the game from there on out.

The Mounties extended their lead to 20 just three minutes into the second half; but the Senators exploded for 25 points in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to single-digits with 5:50 to go. Consecutive Mountie turnovers with just over a minute remaining led to back-to-back layups for Davis & Elkins and the Mountie lead was trimmed to three, 71-68 with under a minute remaining in regulation.

The Senators were forced to foul on the ensuing possession and Cover drained a pair of free throws to seal the victory, earning Mansfield their first win of the 2019-20 season.

The Mounties netted seven 3-pointers to the Senators two and were led by a 50 percent performance (3-of-6) from sophomore guard Sydney Reed.

Davis & Elkins' Jay Kilpatrick (20 points, five rebounds, three assists) and Jamiyah Johnson (19 points, 16 rebounds, one assist) led the Senators on the furious comeback.

The Mountaineers have several days off before they host their first home game of the season at Marion Decker Gym on Friday, Nov. 15 when they welcome Frostburg State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
