Moffe Scores 31 as Mounties Outlast Bloomsburg 88-80

MANSFIELD – Tyler Moffe poured in a career-high 31 points to lead five Mounties in double-figure scoring as Mansfield outlasted visiting Bloomsburg 88-80 Saturday afternoon at First Citizens Community bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.

The win marked the first conference victory of the season for the Mountaineers.

Moffe opened the game with a lay-up and a 3-pointer to give Mansfield (2-16, 1-12 PSAC) the early advantage, but six straight points from the Huskies made it 6-5 five minutes into the game.

Mansfield led by six points at 22-16 near the 10-minute mark in the half before Garret Cook splashed back-to-back treys to extend the advantage to 12 points. After a Bloomsburg bucket, Anthony McFall hit one of his two 3-pointers in the game and followed with a lay-up to give Mansfield a 15-point lead.

The Huskies closed within eight points at the under five-minute mark, but an 8-2 Mansfield run brought the lead back to double-digits. The Mounties took a 47-37 advantage into the break.

Mansfield opened the second half on a 16-4 run with Cook, Moffe and Taylor Sweeney all hitting shots from beyond the arc to increase the lead to 22 points. Later another Moffe 3-pointer gave Mansfield its biggest lead of the game at 69-46 with 15 minutes remaining.

The Mountaineers' hot shooting would cool down though, as Bloomsburg threatened with a 30-7 run over the next 10 minutes to tie the game with under two minutes to play. Sweeney knocked down his fourth trifecta of the game on the next possession and Moffe stole the ball for a cost-to-cost lay-up to give Mansfield an 85-80 lead.

Cook and Eli Alvin converted at the free throw line as the Mountie defense held strong to earn the victory.

Mansfield shot 58.6% (34-58) from the floor including 48.4% (15-31) from deep compared to Bloomsburg hitting 47.8% (33-69) of shots and 41.2% (7-17) from 3-point.

Moffe went 13-20 from field goal including three treys to eclipse his previous career-best of 26 points set earlier this season. Sweeney was 4-of-9 from deep on his way to 16 points with seven rebounds and five blocks.

Mike Rell added 11 points and eight assists with Cook and McFall chipping in 10 points apiece.

Travis Elmore and Sekou Fofana combined for 48 points for Bloomsburg with Elmore posting a double-double with a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Nicholas King and Peyton Mortellite added 11 points.

The Mountaineers continue a five-game home stand with a non-conference match-up against Frostburg State on Tuesday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
