Mansfield Earns Back-to-Back Wins with 64-51 Victory over Frostburg State

MANSFIELD – Taylor Sweeney scored 21 points, going 5-of-7 from 3-point range, and added 10 rebounds as Mansfield defeated non-conference foe Frostburg State 64-51 Tuesday evening at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.

The Mountaineers (3-16, 1-12 PSAC) opened the game on a 7-2 run and would not relinquish their lead the rest of the way. Sweeney poured in 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first-half. The Mounties stretched their lead to as far as 14 before Frostburg State (9-10, 5-3 CAC) climbed back into it on the back of an 11-0 run to pull to within three of the Mountaineers. Mansfield responded by going on a 5-0 run before halftime with the score at 30-24.

The Bobcats came out firing in the second half, pulling back to within two of Mansfield. But, the Mountaineers would respond, pulling their lead back to as far as 17 in the second-half before eventually defeating Frostburg State 64-51.

Mansfield shot 36.5% from the field in the game including 46% in the second half. Frostburg State shot 35% on the night and did not make a 3-pointer going 0-18 on the game from distance. The Mounties shot 36% (9-25) from 3-point land.

The Mountaineers were led in scoring by Sweeney who finished 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double effort of the season. Sweeney was followed by junior Tyler Moffe who finished with 16 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

Mike Rell and Eli Alvin added 12 and 11 points respectively to round out the four Mounties who scored in double figures. Alvin also added a game-high five assists on the night.

Frostburg State was led in scoring by senior forward Edwin Cole who compiled a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He was followed by Daniel Alexander who added eight points.

Mansfield returns to conference play on Saturday afternoon as they play host to Millersville with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
