MANSFIELD –
J.P. Bonanca and
Carlos Espinosa both went yard in game two, but Kutztown took both in the PSAC East doubleheader at Shaute Field on Friday.
Â
Mansfield (9-28, 3-19 PSAC East) was edged by one run in both games, with Kutztown (17-17, 11-11 PSAC East) taking the 10-9 and 6-5 victories.
Â
The Mountaineers were first on the board in the eight-inning opener when
Tyler Guidos came home after doubling to center field. The Golden Bears wasted no time responding, however, scoring two runs in the second and a follow-up run in the third.
Â
In the fourth, Bonanca,
Dio Infante, and
Brady Mengel tallied three consecutive hits and sent Bonanca and Infante home to tie the game at 3-3.
Â
Kutztown added four more runs in the fifth before Mansfield came back with a productive inning of their own.
Owen Lukens opened the hit parade with four Mounties tallying hits, including an Espinosa double to right center. Mansfield was able to score six runs, outhitting KU 5-3 in the inning.
Â
A Ryan Cox home run would tie up the game at 9-9 before Kutztown solidified the 10-9 victory in the top of the eighth.
Â
Bonanca topped the Mounties with two hits in two at bats while driving in a run to go along with two of his own. Guidos also tabbed two hits, including a double.
Â
Luke Hils scattered nine hits in the first five innings before Guidos took the mound in relief. Guidos allowed four hits and two earned runs to take the loss. The Bears sent four different pitches to the circle with Fogarty-Harnish earning the win.
Â
Both teams struggled to get on the board in game two with Kutztown tallying the only two hits through the first two innings. The Bears rolled out three runs in the third and another two in the fifth before the Mountaineers came to life in the fifth.
Â
Espinosa was the first to score as Lukens ripped off the first hit of the inning down the left line.
Eric Senior and Lukens each stole bases to put the Mounties in scoring position before Bonanca drove a three-RBI homer to right field cutting Kutztown's lead to 5-4.
Â
In the sixth, Espinosa went yard with his first collegiate homerun to tie the game but Kutztown would score the game-winning run in the next frame.
Â
Lukens led offensively with two hits, including a double, while Bonanca drove in three RBIs.
Â
Bryce Zaparzynski pitched his second complete-game effort of the season allowing 12 hits and three earned runs. He currently leads the Mounties with a 4.14 ERA.
