Walk-off Run Leads Baseball to Split Against East Stroudsburg in PSAC East Opener

MANSFIELD – Carlos Espinosa scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two as Mansfield split a doubleheader with East Stroudsburg in the PSAC East opener at Shaute Field on Saturday.

In the opener, neither side was able to push across a run until East Stroudsburg (10-7, 1-1 PSAC East) took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. The Warriors added another in the fifth inning with an unearned run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Owen Lukens traded places with Tyler Guidos on an RBI double down the left field line before Dio Infante did the same with his RBI double in left centerfield to tie the game at 2-2.

Fielding errors by Mansfield (6-8, 1-1 PSAC East) proved costly in the sixth inning as the Warrior plated three runs to regain their lead. Guidos plated Colby Schearer with a sac fly in the bottom of the inning, but the Mounties were unable to rally from their deficit.

Connor Johnson pitched 5.0 innings on the mound for ESU with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Nate Fiala picked up the save pitching the final 2.0 innings.

Evan McAndrew allowed just one earned run and struck out eight batters over 5.0 innings but was saddled with the loss.

In game two, East Stroudsburg opened the scoring again with an unearned run on a passed ball in the top of the first. However, that lead would be short-lived as Infante drilled a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to lift to Mounties to a 2-1 advantage. It was the first of the season for Infante.

The Warriors regained the lead in the third when Laine Renaud plated a pair of runs with a double in the gap. In the bottom of the frame, Spencer Zuraski evened the score with a no-doubter solo home run to right field, tying the game at 3-3. It was the first career home run for Zuraski.

Neither side could break the stalemate until ESU produced a run in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

Infante led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk before Espinosa reached on a fielding error, which allowed Infante to score all the way from first. Zuraski struck out, but reached base on a wild third strike and J.P. Bonanca walked to load the bases.

Facing an 0-2 count with one out, Mountie Batter Camren Ney held off on a ball in the dirt that kicked away from the ESU catcher and allowed Espinosa to score from third and end the game. It was the second walk-off win for the Mounties this season.

Tyler Guidos earned the win in relief, pitching the final 0.2 innings. Starting pitcher Luke Hils went 6.1 innings with three earned runs and a pair of strikeouts.

Mansfield will play the Warriors as the away team at Shaute Field on Sunday due to unplayable field conditions at East Stroudsburg.
