Mounties Sweep Assumption to Take Weekend Series

CARY, N.C. – Colby Schearer homered and Luke Hils and Hunter DePrimo pitched gems on the mound to lead Mansfield to a sweep over Assumption on Sunday.

The Mountaineers won both games of the doubleheader by the score of 4-1 as Mansfield (3-1, 0-0 PSAC) took the weekend series winning 3-of-4 over the Greyhounds.

In the opener, J.P. Bonanca walked and later scored on an error in the top of the first inning before Tony Brown scored Camren Ney on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. In the top of the sixth, Mansfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead when Schearer drove in Ney then later scored on a throwing error.

Assumption (1-3, 0-0 NE-10) pushed a run across in the sixth inning, but Mountie reliever Tyler Guidos shut the door on the Greyhounds for the win.

DePrimo pitched 5.0 shutout innings with five hits allowed to go along with four strikeouts.

In game two, Mansfield struck first again with Schearer singling through the middle and later scoring on a wild pitch. However, Assumption would tie the game in the bottom of the third.

Schearer quickly put the Mountaineers back on top with a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning. It was the first home run of the season for Mansfield and the fourth of the career for the sophomore.

In the next inning, Owen Lukens tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a single to left field to score Bonanca and Carlos Espinosa.

Hils continued to deal on the mound to complete the sweep. The senior went the distance allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters.

Schearer had a day at the plate, going 4-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Mansfield is back in action on March 10 against Rockhurst in Kissimmee.
