MANSFIELD – Jovante Lee's long 3-pointer with just over a second to play in regulation forced overtime where Gannon pulled out a 70-62 win over Mansfield on Sunday at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
After a pair of lead changes to start the game, Mansfield jumped out to a 20-13 lead on
Ryan Bernstein's 3-pointer at the 8:14 mark. Gannon used a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to regain the lead at 25-23 with 4:10 to play in the half.
Both sides struggled to knock down shots, as neither team would score over the next four minutes until
Keith Farmer drained a jumper with four seconds remaining to tie the game 25-25 at halftime.
Taylor Sweeney opened the second half with a trifecta, but the Golden Knights quickly regained the lead and built a 36-29 advantage five minutes in. Mansfield went on a 15-8 run using exclusively 3-pointers, with Sweeney and
Tyler Moffe each hitting a pair, to pull within one point at 47-46.
A pair of Moffe free throws would later tie the game and the Mounties took the lead at 50-48 on two more good free throws from Bernstein. Two lead changes later, Sweeney knocked down a pair of free throws to increase the Mansfield lead to three points at 55-52.
Gannon pulled within one point after Matt Johnson connected on a pair of free throws, but the Mountaineer lead went back to three points after Moffe hit both ends of his free throws. Gannon raced down the floor where Lee tossed up a prayer from 35 feet that went in the basket with 1.6 seconds to play. Mansfield rushed a shot to win, but it fell short and the game went into overtime.
Gannon jumped out to a 3-point lead in overtime, but Farmer converted an old fashion 3-point play to tie the game after being fouled on a made lay-up. The Knights outscored Mansfield 10-2 over the final two-and-a-half minutes to earn the win.
Moffe scored a game-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sweeney added 12 points and seven rebounds with Bernstein chipping in 10 points and four assists.
Lee led Gannon with 18 points as DeAnte Cisero posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 boards. Kofi Mills pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the field with Gannon shooting 33.9% from the floor and Mansfield connecting on 32.1% of shots.
