EDINBORO – Mansfield used a strong second half to pull to as close as six points, but Edinboro proved to be too much as the Mountaineers fell 82-73 on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Edinboro (4-4, 2-2 PSAC) came out of the gates strong opening the game on an 8-0 run before Mansfield (1-8, 0-4 PSAC) responded with a Tyler Moffe layup. The Mountaineers would settle in and pull back to within six following a Garrett Cook 3-pointer at 15-9.
Edinboro responded by stretching its lead to as much as 16 on the back of senior forward Trey Staunch, who finished with 16 first-half points. The Mounties would continue to claw back using clutch buckets from Nysir Marshburn and Eli Alvin to pull within 12 at half-time with the score in favor of Edinboro at 46-34. Mansfield would shoot only 34% from the field in the first-half, compared to 67% by the Fighting Scots.
The Mountaineers came out of the locker-room on fire, pulling the Edinboro lead back down to 48-42 on the back of 3-pointers by Garrett Cook and Taylor Sweeney. The Scots responded with back-to-back buckets by Deanthony Owens who finished with 18 points for the Scots. Edinboro paced the Mountaineers through most of the second-half, until an Anthony McFall 3-pointer pulled Mansfield to back to within seven.
Edinboro would respond with yet another offensive outburst, stretching its lead to as far as 13 before defeating Mansfield by a final score of 82-73.
Marshburn led Mansfield in scoring with 16 points while pulling down five rebounds. Taylor Sweeney added 12 points.
Staunch paced Edinboro with 22 points, while Jaryn Simpson finished with a double-double at 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Mansfield returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Mercyhurst with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
