Men’s Basketball Falls at Shaw in Season Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – Boz Bernstein poured in a team-high 27 points to go along with seven assists for Mansfield, but it wouldn't be enough as host Shaw earned a 91-77 win on Saturday in the men's basketball season opener.
 
Mansfield (0-1, 0-0 PSAC) never led in the game, but stayed within single digits of the Bears for much of the first half. Shaw (1-0, 0-0 CIAA) closed out the final four minutes of the half on a 10-3 run to lead 45-33 at halftime.
 
The Bears increased their lead to 20 at the midway point of the second half, but a 13-2 run by Mansfield brought game back to single digits. The Mounties were never able to close the gap and dropped its first outing of the year.
 
Bernstein impressed in his first game as a Mountaineer, connecting on 8-16 from the floor and 9-12 from the free throw line to pace Mansfield in scoring with 27. The senior transfer also dished out a game-high seven assists.
 
Garrett Cook splashed four 3-pointers on his way to 15 points with Taylor Sweeney recording 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Reilly Collins was the fourth Mountie in double-figure scoring, coming off the bench to record 10 points.
 
Naz Marshburn added six rebounds.
 
Amir Hinton, junior transfer from Lock Haven, led all scorers with 29 points for Shaw. Davon Dillard added 19 points as four Bears also hit double-figure scoring.
 
The Mountaineers take on St. Augustine's in the second and final game of the Shaw Tournament Sunday.
