Mounties Snap Shippensburg Streak, Mullins Surpasses 500

MANSFIELD – After 18 straight games, the Mountaineers earned their first win over Shippensburg since 2007 71-54 at First Citizens Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Alyssa Mullins exceeded her 500-career milestone, shooting 9-16 from the floor, including two trifectas. The senior had a perfect 4-4 game from the line while scoring 11 of her game-high 24 points in the third period.

Three other Mounties ended the night in double-figures. Brielle Kelly added 17 points and eight rebounds while freshmen Erin Gibbons put up 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight boards. Mary Kate Rumbaugh also totaled 10 points.

Mansfield (6-12, 4-8 PSAC) held top-scorer Ariel Jones to just 11 points in tonight's match-up; a PSAC leader who was averaging 21.0 points an outing. Kasey Engle led Shippensburg (3-13, 2-8 PSAC) with 13 points.

The Raiders started off on a 5-0 lead before Mullins let a beautiful jumper fall. The lead changed three more times, but back-to-back treys from Gibbons and Paige Whitfield would give the Mounties a six-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Both teams exchanged baskets before the Raiders pulled ahead to their largest lead of the game at six with over a minute left to play. Free throws from Mullins and Rumbaugh would end the half with Ship leading just 34-32.

Mullins' early free throws put an end to the Raiders' lead and Mansfield would pull ahead for the remainder of the contest. The Mountaineers held a 25-to-9 shooting advantage over Ship in the third frame, shooting 10-13 from the floor.

The Mountaineers barreled on, reaching their largest lead of 21 in the fourth quarter before taking care of business at 71-54. Mansfield earned just its sixth win over Shippensburg since the institutions first met in 1982.

Shippensburg was held to just 32.1% (18-56) shooting from the floor while Mansfield connected on 42.2% (27-64) it's of shots.

Mansfield eyes a playoff berth as they now sit fifth in the PSAC East standings beneath Millersville.
