Klein Fires Complete Game Shutout as Mansfield Upends #12 Millersville 13-0 to Earn Series Split

MANSFIELD – Tanner Klein fired a complete game shutout with just five hits allowed as the Mansfield bats came alive in a 13-0 game two win over No. 12 Millersville on Monday at Shaute Field.

The Mountaineers dropped game one 12-5 to defending national runner-up Millersville (18-8, 4-4 PSAC East).

The doubleheader split on Monday gives Mansfield (13-13, 4-4 PSAC East) its second straight series split against a PSAC Eastern division team.

In the nightcap, the Mountaineers struck first with a run in the bottom of the first when Ryan Paige drove in Taylor Hillson with a single into left field.

After a 1-2-3 top of the second, Mansfield exploded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to jump out to an 8-0 lead. With bases loaded, Taylor Hillson got the party started, driving in Brady Mengel before Scott Rockwell scored on a throwing error. Dio Infante plated two more runs with a single into left field. Klein helped his own cause with a three-run home run to right centerfield to cap the eight-run inning.

In the fourth, it was two-out magic as Mengel walked before Colby Schearer hit his first career home run to left field. With two mates aboard, Peter Pena drilled his team-leading fourth home run to increase the Mountie lead to 13-0.

Klein worked through the next two innings allowing just two total hits before getting into a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh. The senior pitcher forced a ground ball that turned into a game-ending double play to preserve the shutout victory.

Klein allowed just five hits to go along with five walks and four strikeouts in his third win of the season. It was the first complete game shutout for a Mountaineer pitcher since Luke Hils and Brandon Garrett tossed back-to-back no hitters against Kutztown during the 2016 season.

David Manasek took the loss.

In the opener, Millersville hung five runs in the top of the third via homers from Mitch Stoltzfus and Cole Friese. However, the Mounties responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Infante drove in the first before Hillson scored on an error.

In the fourth, Mengel drove in a run then Chavarria scored on an error to bring Mansfield within one. A Hillson double down the line plated another run to tie the game at 5-5.

Stoltzfus hit a solo shot in the fifth before the Marauders took a big lead with five more runs in the sixth. Millersville tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to extend the lead to 12-5.

Matt Ulrich earned the win in relief, pitching just 1.0 innings with one hit and one strikeout.

Hils went 5.0 innings on the mound, but took the loss.

Mansfield travels to Lincoln for non-conference play on Wednesday.
