CARY, N.C. – Mansfield won the opener 6-5 then took the nightcap 3-0 to sweep a doubleheader with Assumption on Sunday at the USA Baseball Complex.

The Mountaineers finished 3-1 in a four-game weekend series with the non-conference opponent out of the Northeast-10 Conference.

Mansfield (4-4, 0-0 PSAC East) got the scoring started early, plating four runs in the top of the first inning.
Ryan Paige drove in three runs with a bases loaded triple before a
Wes Custer brought in Paige with a single in the next at bat.

Assumption (1-3, 0-0 NE-10) cut the Mountaineer lead in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Taylor Hillson's double in the fourth inning scored
Brady Mengel, but the Greyhounds pushed across two more runs in the fifth trail by just one run at 5-4.

Peter Pena added another run for Mansfield in the top of the seventh with a sac fly to score Hillson.

Assumption loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with just one out, but Mountie relief pitcher
Edwin Lopez got out of the jam with just one run allowed to preserve the win.

Evan McAndrew won his second game of the year in as many appearances, striking out four batters through 4.2 innings worked. Lopez picked up his first save of the year.

Mike Curtis took the loss for the Greyhounds.

It was the
Jerry Chavarria show for Mansfield offensively with the senior plating all three runs in game two. Chavarria went 4-4 at the plate and drove in runs in the first, third and fifth innings.

Tanner Klein threw 6.0 shutout innings with just four hits and two walks allowed while striking out three.
Tyler Guidos was perfect through the final three outs and struck out two batters to pick up the save.

Klein went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and a walk.

The Mountaineers are back in action on March 11 at Chowan.
