MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Mansfield pounded out 23 hits in a doubleheader sweep at Chowan on Saturday, winning the opener 8-5 before taking the nightcap 9-3 to run its win streak to five games.

Mansfield (6-4) put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first with
Peter Pena and
Ryan Paige knocking in runners. However, two-run homers by Chowan (8-14) in both the second and third innings lifted the Hawks to a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth,
Dio Infante doubled to left center to plate
Colby Schearer before
Taylor Hillson scored on a wild pitch. Pena drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left field scoring Infante to give the Mounties a 5-4 advantage.

Schearer made it a two-run game with an RBI single up the middle to score
Bryce Zaparzynski in the sixth. Infante and Klein scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-4 lead.

Zack Cooper led-off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to cut the lead to three runs, but Hawks were unable to mount a comeback.

Tyler Guidos earned the win in relief, pitching the final 3.2 innings with just two hits and one earned run allowed. The freshman struck out two and walked just one batter. Will Edwards took the loss for Chowan.

Paige, who went 3-4 at the plate, was one of four Mounties to record multiple hits in the game along with Infante, Klein and Schearer.

The Mountaineers were first to get on the board in game two as well with Pena scoring Hillson in the top of the first. Chowan evened the score in the second inning.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Infante drilled a solo homer to left field to give Mansfield the lead before Rockwell drove in another run. With bases loaded in the sixth inning, Paige drove a ball deep into right center that scored all three runs when two outfielders collided for an error giving the Mounties a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Chowan struck two runs to close within three.

Hillson stroked a solo home run in the top of the seventh before
Dalton Lewis pinch hit to drive in two more runs and give Mansfield a 9-3 lead.

Starting pitcher
Luke Hils closed out a complete game effort and earned his second win of the season. The junior scattered seven hits and did not allow a walk while striking out five.

Hillson produced from the lead-off spot in game two, going 4-5 at the plate with three runs and an RBI.
Brady Mengel collected a pair of hits.
The Mountaineers will complete the four-game series against Chowan on Sunday.
