MANSFIELD –
Matt Tamanosky became the 26
th player in program history to reach the 1,000 point milestone in a 63-52 loss to IUP in PSAC crossover play at Decker Gymnasium on Saturday.
Â
Cedrick Powell and
Jeremiah Worthem each recorded a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds for Mansfield (4-4, 3-2 PSAC). Tamanosky added 11 points with
Malik Carter chipping in 10 points and five rebounds.
Â
IUP (7-4, 4-1 PSAC) was paced by Anthony Glover's 23 points and a double-double by Jacobo Diaz with 10 points and 11 boards.
Â
The Mountaineers scored the first five points of the game then held a 7-4 advantage before IUP scored eight unanswered points to take its first lead. The Crimson Hawks led for the majority of the first half with Mansfield taking a two-point lead on a Tamanosky jumper in the final minute. Blake Danielak drained a 3-pointer for IUP with 33 seconds to play to give the Hawks a 27-26 advantage heading into halftime.
Â
Mansfield kept the deficit to two possessions through much of the first 10 minutes of the second half, but a Glover trey gave IUP a 10-point advantage with 10:19 to play in the game. The Mountaineers pulled within six points two minutes later on a pair of Powell free throws, but would not be able to overcome the deficit.
Â
IUP shot 43.6% (24-55) from the floor including 40.7% (11-27) from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Mountaineers shot 40.8% (20-49) from field goal and just 17.6% (3-17) from 3-point.
Â
Tamanosky is the first Mountaineer to hit the 1,000-point threshold since
Joe Bell accomplished the feat during the 2014-15 season. It is an incredible accomplishment for Tamanosky who scored just 31 points in 16 games as a freshman before recording 382 points in 2015-16 and 464 points in 2016-17. He is averaging 16.0 points a game this season.
Â
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Mounties.
Â
Mansfield takes an extended break for finals and the holiday before traveling to East Stroudsburg for the PSAC East opener on Dec. 30.
