Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Roberts Wesleyan Outpaces Mounties Late in the Home Opener

MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University women's basketball team aggressively outscored the opponent in the first half but Roberts Wesleyan came back to secure a 74-63 victory on Wednesday.

Seniors Brielle Kelly and Alyssa Mullins combined for 32 points while Mary Kate Rumbaugh and Erin Gibbons added a joint 23 of their own. Kelly reached double figures in the first half connecting on five of her eight attempts and grabbing seven of her team-high eight boards.

After a slow start, Mansfield (3-3, 1-1 PSAC) took the lead off of a Kelly layup with 1:30 left in the first quarter. Emily Miller cut the lead back down to 16-15 after sinking a trifecta at the buzzer going into the second.

An early Redhawks layup would be the only scoring in the first two minutes before Rumbaugh put Mansfield ahead with a 3-pointer. The lead changed hands four times in the next 15 minutes before Erin Gibbons connected on a trey to regain the lead with 4:16 remaining in the half.

Mullins contributed greatly to the offense in the second half, adding 13 of her 15 total points in the third quarter. The Mountaineers would jump out to their highest lead of the game at 48-35 before entering the final frame at an even 55-55. The Redhawks would regain the lead and hold it through the end.

Melanie Taylor also added six points and five rebounds after having a perfect 4-4 from the line. Erin Gibbons knocked down three shots, all from the outside, and added four assists and three rebounds.

Sara Nady led Roberts Wesleyan (3-2, 0-0 ECC) with a game-high 19 points and three rebounds. Three other Redhawks followed suit in double figures.

Mansfield continuously crashed the boards, out rebounding the Redhawks 37-37.

The women enter a double header this weekend, facing Edinboro on Saturday followed by Mercyhurst on Sunday. Both games are set for 1 p.m.
