#10 California Pulls Away After a Strong Mountie Start

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Mountaineers challenged No. 10 California early but dropped the PSAC match-up 71-49 on Sunday.

Alyssa Mullins and Brielle Kelly combined for 23 points while Kelly grabbed a team-high eight boards. Freshman Erin Gibbons had a perfect game beyond the arc with all three off her field goals coming from the outside.

California (4-0) got off to a 10-6 led in the first five minutes but a Mullins layup and a perfect pair of free throws from Mary Kate Rumbaugh cut the Vulcan lead to just two. A late Jumper from Kelly brought Mansfield (3-2) into double digits as the Vulcans led by just five at the end of the first quarter.

Mansfield increased its scoring each quarter and outscored its opponent 15-7 in the last frame. Gibbons opened the fourth with a pair of trifectas for the Mounties while Mullins and McKenzie Hatch would put on a perfect 5-5 show from the line.

Shatara Parsons topped California with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds.

The Mountaineers shot 38.3% (18-47) from the floor and held a free throw percentage advantage with 69.2%. The Vulcans hit 43.1% (25-58) of their attempts.

The women travel to Lehigh on Wednesday for an exhibition match-up at 6 p.m.
