Mounties Drop Season Opener at Felician

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Malik Carter and Matt Tamanosky combined for 47 points, but Mansfield could not contain a red-hot Felician in an 86-72 non-conference loss in the season opener on Tuesday.

Carter went 8-16 form the floor to score a game-high 25 points and pulled down eight boards. Tamanosky missed just two field goals on his way to 22 points.

Jahmir Green came off the bench to add nine points for the Mounties.

Felician (1-2, 0-0 CACC) was dangerous from beyond the arc all game long, connecting on 46.4% (13-28) of 3-pointers.

Terell Spaulding paced four Golden Falcons in double-figure scoring with 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the double-double. Gjaimier Standford added 14 points with Zamir Wright and Jordan Compass each chipping in 11 points.

A pair of treys from Carter helped Mansfield (0-1, 0-0 PSAC) take an early six-point lead early. The Mountaineers maintained the lead until Spaulding splashed a 3-pointer at the 13:07 mark to tie the game at 17-17.

Felician took hold of the lead and built a 10-point advantage with just under seven minutes to play in the half. A pair of made free throws by Carter brought Mansfield within three points at 42-39 just before the end of the half.

Gerasimos Koutoufas and Tamanosky opened the second half with back-to-back lay-ups to regain the lead. The Golden Eagle's Mansfield Warren Jr. answered with a trey at the other end to flip the lead back to Felican.

The Mountaineers kept the game within two possessions for much of the second half, but Felician was able to pull away late to earn the non-conference victory.

Mansfield continues a three-game road trip with a pair of PSAC crossover games this Saturday and Sunday at Seton Hill and California.
