Kelly Powers Mansfield Past Cheyney for 62-57 PSAC Win

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Brielle Kelly scored a game-high 19 points to power Mansfield past Cheyney 62-57 Friday night on the road for the Mountaineers' first PSAC win of the season.

Kelly connected on 8-of-14 field goals in the game and was a perfect 3-3 at the charity stripe to lead Mansfield (3-9, 1-7 PSAC) offensively. The junior scored 12 of her game high 19 points in the second half while pulling down eight rebounds. Bella Ricci was the only other Mountaineer in double figure scoring, coming off the bench to put up 11 points.

Rumbaugh was just shy of her third double-double of the season with nine points and nine rebounds. Tianna Jackson and Steph Davis each added eight points.

Leading scorer TaKayla Ellis scored a team-high 14 points with Marlon Herring and Qiuinniea Gross each recording double-doubles for Cheyney (1-7, 1-7 PSAC).

Mansfield came out of the gate ice cold, going scoreless over the first four minutes of play until Ricci knocked down a trifecta to cut the Cheyney lead to 8-3. The Wolves held an 18-8 lead with just over a minute to play, but 3-pointers by Steph Davis and Micaiah Battle before the end of the quarter helped bring the Mounties within six points at 20-14.

A 10-4 run tied the game at 24-24 midway through the second quarter before another Ricci trey gave the Mountaineers their first lead. Mansfield outscored the Wolves 16-4 in the second half to take a 30-24 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Mansfield held its biggest lead of the game at eight points but the Wolves slowly worked away their deficit to tie the game once again at 42-42 with 2:21 to play. An old fashion 3-point play by Kelly put Mansfield up by three points, but back-to-back trifectas gave Cheyney the lead. Kelly's lay-up in the final seconds of the quarter cut the Mansfield deficit to 48-47.

The first five minutes of the fourth quarter featured five lead changes before another Ricci trey game Mansfield the lead for the final time. A pair of Ricci free throws with 13 seconds to play gave Mansfield a five-point advantage and sealed the game for the Mountaineers' first conference victory.

Cheyney was held to just 31.8% (21-66) shooting from the floor while Mansfield connected on 41.5% (22-53) it's of shots.

Mansfield returns home on Monday to host Shippensburg at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium. Monday is 2-for-1 Night at Decker with two fans gaining admission for the price of one.
