Mounties Cruise Past Lincoln in Doubleheader Sweep

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Cruise Past Lincoln in Doubleheader Sweep

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Freshman Jeremy Worlinsky threw four scoreless innings in relief as Mansfield pounded out 15 hits to cruise to a 17-4 victory over Lincoln in the opener before completing the sweep with a 9-5 decision in game two Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

In game one, Mansfield got runners aboard in the top of the first with an Eric Schanzenbacher walk and Anthony Renz hit-by-pitch. Zephan Kash followed with a double to centerfield to score both and give the Mounties an early lead.

Lincoln threatened with bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but starting pitcher Matt Engler struck out the batter to end the inning.

Renz opened the third with a double to right before Jacob Molison homered to deep centerfield to plate two more runs for Mansfield. However, Lincoln answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs on four hits to even the score.

In the top of the fourth, Schanzenbacher reached with a walk and then stole second before moving to third on a flyout. A Renz RBI single in the hole at shortstop allowed Schanzenbacher to score and give Mansfield the 5-4 lead.

Schanzenbacher drove in the first three runs of the fifth inning with a three-run home run to centerfield, also scoring Scott Rockwell and Ryan Paige. In the next at bat, Westyn Baylor reached with a single before scoring on a Renz double to the gap. Kash got aboard with a hit by pitch then both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Molison struck a bases-clearing double to add two more runs before scoring himself with a Paige single to make it 12-4 in the Mounties' favor.

In the top of the seventh, Dalton Lewis drew a one-out walk before back-to-back singles by Molison and Paige loaded the bases. Dave Glueck reached on an error which allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate. A Rockwell double plated Paige before Taylor Hillson's sacrifice fly scored Glueck. Another defensive error allowed Rockwell to score and put Mansfield way out front at 17-4.

Worlinski tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out two batters to pick up his first career win. Herman Fortson took the loss for Lincoln.

Paige led MU offensively, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Renz and Molison each went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Molison recorded four RBIs in the game.

In game two, Mansfield was first to put runs on the board when Rockwell drove in Paige and Molison with a single up the middle in the top of the second. The Lions score a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
After a scoreless third, singles by Molison and Wes Custer and a reached on error by Paige loaded the bases for the Mountaineers. Schanzenbacher drew a walk to force in a run before Baylor scored two more with a single. Back-to-back walks by Renz and Kash pushed across another run to give Mansfield a 6-2 advantage.

Lincoln tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to close within one run at 6-5.

With runners on the corners in the seventh, Paige reached on an error which allowed Renz to score from third. A Custer sac fly scored Molison before Rockwell's RBI double brought in Paige.

Mansfield starting pitcher Louis Sick earned the victory on the mound, pitching 6.0 inning allowing five earned runs on five hits. The senior struck out a career-high nine batters in the outing.

The Mountaineers return to PSAC East action on Friday at Lock Haven.
