Mounties Sweep Up Lock Haven in PSAC East Doubleheader

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Sweep Up Lock Haven in PSAC East Doubleheader

LOCK HAVEN – Taylor Hillson's RBI double in the top of the eighth lifted Mansfield to a 7-6 win in game one before Chas Parsons pitched a gem in game two as the Mounties rallied for a 6-5 victory to earn a huge PSAC East sweep over Lock Haven Friday.

The Mountaineers opened game one with a run in the top of the first inning when Zephan Kash's sacrifice fly to left field plated Eric Schanzenbacher who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

After a scoreless second inning, Westyn Baylor gave Mansfield a 2-0 advantage when he drilled a solo home run over the left field fence. The round-tripper was Baylor's team-leading sixth of the season.

However, Lock Haven scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third to even the score.

In the top of the fifth, Schanzenbacher reached and advanced to second on an error before scoring via a Baylor single. Anthony Renz followed with a single of his own to bring in Baylor before Kash was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Jacob Molison's single into center field scored another run to give Mansfield the 5-2 lead.

The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning with Hillson's sac fly to score Scott Rockwell.

Lock Haven opened the bottom of the inning with four singles and a hit by pitch as the Bald Eagles rallied for four runs to tie the game up at 6-6.

Renz stroked a one-out double in the top of the seventh and advanced to third on a groundout to first, but was left stranded. The Eagles got a runner on with an error in the bottom of the inning, but Mansfield retired the side to force extra innings.

In the eighth, Dave Glueck drew a one-out walk before Rockwell singled up the middle. Hillson placed a double in the gap to left to score Glueck from second, giving Mansfield the go-ahead run and putting two more runners in scoring position. Two straight strikeouts ended the top half as Lock haven went to final at bats.

Zach Sacoman struck out the first batter then forced a groundout, but back-to-back singles put runners at the corners. Sacoman forced another groundout to preserve the victory.

Sacoman picked up the win in relief after 3.0 innings of work to move his record to 4-1. Starting pitcher Tommy Alexander threw 5.0 innings with nine hits, four earned runs and five strikeouts. Alexander did not issue a walk in his appearance.

Nick Hornbaker took the loss for LHU.

In game two, Lock Haven went out in front in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on five hits including Justin Sleigh's solo home run.

In the top of the fourth, Mansfield exploded four six runs to jump out to a 6-3 lead. Wes Custer, Rockwell and Hillson started the rally with three straight singles before Schanzenbacher drove in a pair with his double to center field. Baylor followed with a single then advanced to second on an error, scoring Hillson and Schanzenbacher in the process. Renz reached on another error and Kash walked to reload the bases. Molison drove an RBI single to right field and Ryan Paige plated another with a sac fly to give MU the three-run lead.

Lock Haven wouldn't go away quietly though, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to close within one at 6-5. Ryan Matthews retired the side in order for Mansfield in the bottom of the seventh for the PSAC East sweep.

Chas Parsons was stellar in relief for the Mounties, pitching 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs. Matthews earned the save.

Tyler Carns took the loss for the Eagles.

The Mountaineers return home to host Lock Haven at Shaute Field for Senior Day.
