Shippensburg Takes Two from Mounties

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Shippensburg Takes Two from Mounties

SHIPPENSBURG – Westyn Baylor collected five hits while driving in five runs and scoring three himself, but Mansfield dropped a pair of PSAC East games on the road at Shippensburg's Fairchild Field. Shippensburg rallied to win game one 5-1 before holding off Mansfield in a 13-9 victory in game two.

Mansfield (1-11, 0-4 PSAC East) played as the home team for both games due to unplayable conditions at Shaute Field.

The Mountaineers struck early in game one, with Baylor driving in Taylor Hillson in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the left side. Hillson led off the inning with a single to the shortstop.

Shippensburg (6-12, 3-3 PSAC East) put runners on in each of the next three innings but was unable to push across a run as the Mounties held on to their 1-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Raiders pushed across three runs when Ryan McMillen drove in two runs with a single before Grant Hoover brought in another run with a double in the next at bat. Shippensburg pushed across two more runs in the seventh.

Marcus Shippey earned the complete game victory for Shippensburg, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out 11 batters. Tommy Alexander took the loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.

It was Shippensburg who got the scoring started in game two as Austin Allison hit a lead-off solo shot over the right field fence.

In the bottom of the inning, Hillson drew a walk before Eric Schanzenbacher and Baylor reached on errors to load the bases. An Anthony Renz RBI single drove home Hillson to tie the game at one run apiece and keep the bases juiced. Jacob Molison drove in Schanzenbacher to give Mansfield the 2-1 lead.

The Raiders regained the lead in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits and an error to take a 4-2 advantage.

Dave Glueck led off the bottom of the inning with a single, but was forced out on a fielder's choice in the next at bat. Schanzenbacher hit a two-out single to put runners at first and second before Baylor put the Mounties in front at 5-4 with a three-run homer to left field.

Shippensburg once again took over the lead, hanging five runs of four hits and an error in the top of the third. Mike Marcinco capped the scoring in the inning with a three-run home run of his own.

In the bottom half of the frame, Glueck cut Mansfield's deficit to 9-6 with an RBI double to the gap in left to score Owen Lukens.

Shippensburg added one run in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while Mansfield had a run in the fourth to make it a 12-7 ball game.

Baylor hit his second home run of the game and team-best fourth of the season to lead-off the sixth. The Mountaineers added another run later in the inning when Lukens drove in Renz with an RBI double to cut the Ship lead to 12-9.

The Raiders tacked on another run in the top of the seventh.

Josh Kutchey earned the win in relief, pitching 3.0 innings for the Raiders. Matt Zielen took the loss after allowing five earned runs in 2.2 innings.

Baylor led MU offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs.

Mansfield takes on Shippensburg again tomorrow at Fairchild Field.
