FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Late Rally Comes Up Short at Lock Haven
LOCK HAVEN –
Brielle Kelly netted 20 second-half points and Mansfield scored 31 points in the fourth quarter alone but the Mountaineer's late rally came up just short in a 74-68 set-back at Lock Haven Tuesday night.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair featuring seven lead changes and one tie. The Bald Eagles opened the game with an early lead at 5-2 but, Mansfield took over the lead on back-to-back lay-ups by
Becky Evans and extended it to 8-5 on a
Katie Fitzpatrick jumper. Both side traded baskets over the final three minutes with Mansfield holding a 14-13 advantage at the end of the half.
Two ties and a lead change later, Lock Haven held a 19-18 advantage with 6:51 to play in the half. The Mountaineers trailed by just one point at the 3:02 mark, but the Eagles closed out the half on a 13-2 run to hold a 35-24 lead.
In the second half, Lock Haven built its lead up to 16 points twice before ending the third quarter with a 51-37 lead.
Mansfield worked its deficit down to single digits over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before a pair of Fitzpatrick free throws three minutes later closed the Mounties within eight points at 59-51. Mansfield brought its deficit down to six points three times over the final three minutes but could pull no closer.
Kelly hit nine of her 10 field goals in the second half on her way to score a game-high 22 points for MU. She also grabbed a season-high nine boards. Fitzpatrick went 8-13 from the floor to score 17 points while recording seven assists and seven rebounds. Evans chipped in 11 points.
Fitzpatrick moves to 14
th on the Mansfield all-time scoring list, tying Steph Rieser (2001-04) at 1,026 career points. The senior also moves past Cheryl Farabaugh (1995-98) for fifth in career steals with 210.
Mackenzie Linvingston led five Eagles in double-figure scoring with 21 points. Livingston and Lysa Mealing each notched double-doubles.
Lock Haven won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Mounties 44-29 overall including 21-10 on the offensive glass.
Mansfield returns to Decker Gymnasium for a pair of PSAC crossover games on Friday and Saturday against Clarion and Pitt-Johnstown.
