FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Women's Basketball Knocks off Millersville 72-67 in Season Opener
MANSFIELD –
Katie Fitzpatrick poured in a game-high 28 points to lead Mansfield to a huge season-opening victory over Millersville Wednesday night at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
The victory snapped an 17-game winning streak for Millersville in the series.
Mansfield dominated the first two quarters of play, holding a 43-28 lead at halftime. In the second half, Millersville worked its deficit down to just six points at 55-49 at the end of the third quarter.
Mansfield led by just three points with 5:30 to play in the game and then two points with 1:01 remaining. A Lay-up by Millersville's Yasmin Cooper brought the game to within one point at 68-67 with just 12 seconds remaining. However,
Becky Evans would close the door by making all four of her free throw attempts to seal the victory for Mansfield.
Fitzpatrick went 11-14 from the floor including a pair of treys to lead three Mounties in double-figure scoring.
Becky Evans recorded a career-high 18 points with
Melanie Taylor adding 10.
Princella McCullough grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Shelby Reimer led Millersville with 15 points.
The Mountaineers hit the road for the first time to take on Slippery Rock and Edinboro in a pair of PSAC crossover games this weekend.
