FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountaineers Fall 6-4 in Extras to #10 Shippensburg in Nightcap, Drop Opener 3-1

SHIPPENSBURG – Mansfield took No. 10 Shippensburg to extra innings in game two, but came up just short in a thrilling 6-4 PSAC East battle on Thursday at Fairchild Field. The Mountaineers fell 3-1 in game one.

The doubleheader was a make-up from last Saturday's regularly scheduled home opener against Shippensburg that was postponed due to weather. Mansfield (12-7, 0-4 PSAC East) played as the home team in both games despite being on the road.

In the opener, Shippensburg (16-3, 4-0 PSAC East) scored three runs in the top of the second inning to lead Mansfield 3-0 early.

Mansfield put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third inning when Dave Glueck was hit by a pitch then advanced to second on Taylor Hillson's sac bunt, but the Mounties failed to bring the runner home. The Mountaineers threatened again in the fourth inning when Eric Schanzenbacher singled to right field before stealing second. Schanzenbacher advanced to third on a groundout, but was left stranded.

Mansfield pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth inning when Stanton Tentnowski scored from second on Hillson's RBI single to right field.

Brandon Garrett went the distance for Mansfield, pitching 7.0 innings with eight hits and three earned runs allowed. The freshman struck out two batters and allowed just a pair of walks in the game.

Ship's Nick Massetti moved to 4-0 on the season after throwing 6.0 innings with three hits and one earned run. Austin Bartley picked up his fifth save pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

In game two, the first three innings came and went without either team recording a hit.

The Mountaineers struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brandon Miller drew a bases loaded walk to score Tentnowski. However, Shippensburg regained the lead in the next inning via a two-run homer by Cody Ezolt.

The Raiders added another run in the top of the sixth to lead 3-1.

Mansfield answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs to tie the game at 3-3. Scott Rockwell scored the first run on a throwing error before Seth Tressler singled to bring home Miller.

In the bottom of the seventh, Schanzenbacher reached on a one-out single in the hole before advancing to second on a wild pitch. PSAC home run leader Johnny LeClair was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second but Mansfield couldn't bring the winning run home.

Shippensburg took advantage of the top of the eighth, scoring three runs on four hits and an error to take a 6-3 lead.

Down by three runs, Miller led off the inning with a single up the middle then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Miller moved over to third on a groundout before scoring after Hillson reached on a throwing error. The Mountaineers moved the tying runs to second and third but came up short.

Thomas Schwartz earned the win for Ship after pitching the seventh inning. Pat Kregeloh picked up the save after pitching the final inning.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to host Kutztown at Shaute Field on Friday for PSAC East play.
