FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Cheyney Holds off Mansfield 73-62

MANSFIELD – Kia Whitley-Duncan dropped 34 points, including 29 in the second half alone, to lead visiting Cheyney past Mansfield 73-62 Saturday afternoon despite double-double efforts from Jena Matter and Katie Fitzpatrick.

Matter was honored prior to the game after surpassing the 1,000 point milestone during Thursday's game at Kutztown.

Whitley-Duncan connected on 13 field goals, including three treys, and four free throws in the game to record a career-high in scoring. The junior shot an incredible 11-of-13 from the floor in the second half.

Destiny McFarlane recorded a career-best 16 boards off the Wolves' bench before fouling out of the game.

Fitzpatrick led the Mountaineers in scoring with 16 points and tied a career-high in rebounds with 13. Fitzpatrick pulled in seven offensive rebounds.

Matter recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. With her performance, Matter moves past Jessica Pfeiffer (2000-04) for 14th on the all-time scoring list. The senior is just 10 points away from Stephanie Rieser (2001-05) at 1,026 career points.

Megan McSwain was the third Mountaineer in double-figure scoring with 10 points.

Guards Tianna Jackson and Alyssa DeRichie each pulled down nine boards in the game.

Mansfield shot just 25.9% (21-81) from the floor compared to Cheyney's 41.3% (26-63).

The Mountaineers travel to Millersville on Saturday for a PSAC East clash.
