FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield Falls in Heartbreaker to Lock Haven
MANSFIELD –
Jena Matter scored a game-high 20 points, but Mansfield saw a late lead dissapear after a called foul allowed Lock Haven to score a pair of go ahead free thows to escape with a 66-63 victory Saturday afternoon at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield struggled to get much going offensively in the first half, shooting just 25.0% from the field compared to Lock Haven's 38.7%. The Lady Eagles led for the entire half and extended their lead to 13 points with under a minute to play.
Maria Kelleher's late layup sent Mansfield into halftime trailing 31-20.
Matter and
Katie Yale opened the second half with a pair of scores to cut the lead to seven points, but Lock Haven built its lead back up to 12 points with 15 minutes remaining. An
Alyssa DeRichie jumper made it a two possesion game with 11:17 left before a
Megan McSwain trey brought Mansfield within five at the 8:36 mark.
The Mountaineers slowly erased the Lock Haven lead and found themselves ahead for the first time in the game at 56-55 on a
Katie Fitzpatrick layup with 5:38 remaining. Both teams traded leads four different times over the next two minutes before a Lock Haven lay-up tied the game at 60-60 with under three minutes left.
Matter scored a tough lay-up in traffic and hit the ensuing free throw shot to give the Mountaineers a three-point lead with 2:24 remaining. It would be the last time Mansfield scored as Lock Haven connected on six-of-eight free throw attempts to sneak away with the PSAC Eastern division victory.
Matter went 8-for-14 from the floor to score her third 20+ point game of the season. The senior moves past Alicia Espigh (2004-08) for 12
th all-time on the program scoring list with 1,049 career points.
DeRichie added 13 points for Mansfield and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. McSwain chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Lock Haven's Marrysa Moyer led four players in double-figure scoring with 16 points. Shaleta Hayward netted 15 points while Rachael McDaniel and Emily Daugherty added 10 points each.
Mansfield travels to Shippensburg on Wednesday.
