FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Binghamton Pulls Away from Mounties in Second Half

BINGHAMTON – Despite a roster that featured 10 newcomers, the Mansfield University women's basketball team played like veterans for much of the first half before Binghamton used 3-point shooting to pull away in the second half in a 83-60 exhibition win at the Events Center Friday night.

Although it was only an exhibition game, the Mountaineers showed they were already a clearly better team than they were last season.

Freshman Brielle Kelly played a strong inside game scoring 15 points and pulling down eight rebounds while junior Katie Fitzpatrick added 14 points and seven boards to lead the Mountaineers.

Mansfield also got a strong showing from senior Alyssa DeRichie who finished the night with eight points and five rebounds but the Mountaineers couldn't stop Binghamton's 3-point shooting especially in the second.

It was a close game throughout a first half that featured six Mansfield leads and six lead changes until Binghamton used the long-distance ball and a 10-4 run to build a 37-29 halftime advantage.

Kelly scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half but Mansfield was plagued by foul trouble sending the Bearcats to the line where they connected on 12-of-16 second half attempts.

Mansfield, which connected on just 3-of-14 of its 3-point attempts, shot 38.1% from the floor to Binghamton's 49.2%. Binghamton enjoyed a slight 41-37 rebounding advantage.

Jasmine Sina topped five Bearcats in double-figures with a game-high 18 points, all of them coming on 3-pointers.


Mansfield opens the regular season by hosting Central Penn next Saturday.
