FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Women's Basketball Cruises Past Central Penn 106-43 in Season Opener
MANSFIELD –
Brielle Kelly's double-double led five Mounties in double-figure scoring as Mansfield cruised past Central Penn 106-43 Saturday night at Decker Gymnasium.
Saturday was "Mounties Go Blue for Diabetes" night as funds were raised for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and senior guard
Alyssa DeRichie was recognized prior to the game for her valiant fight with type 1 diabetes.
Kelley connected on 6-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 from free throw to total a game-high 17 points while pulling down 16 boards. Nine of Kelly's 16 rebounds came off the offensive glass.
Tianna Jackson scored a career-high 14 points while
Melanie Taylor came off the bench to put up 13 points. DeRichie and
Becky Evans each chipped in 10 points.
Mary Kate Rumbaugh pulled down 12 rebounds and added seven points.
All 11 players in the game for Mansfield got in the scoring column.
Central Penn was led by Nicole Schmidhammer who recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Marlin Sanchez added 16 points.
Mansfield held the Knights to just 29.2% shooting from the field. The Mounties connected on 52.9% of shots from the floor.
The Mountaineers dominated the boards with a 61-22 advantage.
Mansfield quickly built a 14-point lead before the first media timeout and extended it to a 31-point advantage with just over nine minutes to play in the half. The Mountaineers carried a 65-24 lead into halftime.
Mansfield continued to roll in the second half, leading by as much as 64 points before claiming the victory.
Mansfield's 106 points was the most scored since defeating Baptist Bible 107-33 on Jan. 7, 1991. It was the first season-opening victory since a 94-33 win over Fisher College to start the 2009-10 season.
The Mountaineers open PSAC Eastern division play on Wednesday when they travel to Kutztown.
