Mounties Stumble in PSAC East Opener at KutztownKUTZTOWN – Mansfield held an early lead but the Mountaineers had no answer for Alyssa Bonenberger who recorded a double-double by halftime on her way to a game-high 25 points as Kutztown handed Mansfield a 93-61 setback in the PSAC East opener for both teams Wednesday night at Keystone Hall.
Mansfield held a 7-6 lead just over three minutes into the game on a pair of free throws by freshman
Becky Evans and trailed 13-11 after seven minutes of play before Kutztown, behind Bonenberger, started to slowly pull away.
The Golden Bears 10-0 run to take a 23-11 advantage midway through the first half and would extend the lead to 42-28 at halftime.
Boneberger was virtually unstoppable in the first half, scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. She would finish the game with 25 points and 15 rebounds.
Mansfield got a team-best 11 points from junior
Katie Fitzpatrick who saw limited action after picking up her fourth foul relatively early in the second half. Evans, added 10 points with
Tianna Jackson and
Jessica Crawley scoring nine points each.
Kutztown (1-0, 1-0) shot 48% from the and got 46 points off the bench to Mansfield 36% shooting and 21 bench points. The Golden Bears also enjoyed a 59-40 rebounding advantage.
Mansfield returns home to host Cheyney in a PSAC East tilt Saturday afternoon.
