FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountaineers Fall to IUP in 2014 Opener
MANSFIELD –
Alyssa DeRichie paced four Mountaineers in double-figure scoring, but IUP's Lindsay Stamp and Ashley Stoner combined for 42 points to lead the Crimson Hawks to a 78-63 PSAC crossover victory Friday afternoon at First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium.
DeRichie connected on 6-of-8 field goals and hit all four free throws to lead the Mountaineers offensively with 16 points. The junior also recorded a team-high four assists in the game.
Megan McSwain hit a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 14 points.
Jena Matter recorded 12 points while
Katie Fitzpatrick was just shy of a double-double with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
IUP's (10-1, 2-1 PSAC West) Stamp knocked down five treys, all in the first half, to score a game-high 23 points. Stoner was 9-of-14 from the floor to tally 19 points in the winning effort.
The Hawks shot 45.0% (9-20) from beyond the arc and outrebounded Mansfield (0-12, 0-4 PSAC East) 44-26.
The Mountaineers shot a season-best 51.1% (23-45) from field goal. Mansfield's 14 turnovers in the game was the third fewest total of the season.
IUP struck first with a Stamp 3-pointer and built its lead to 10 points over the first seven minutes of the game. However, an 11-9 run gave the Mounties a 20-19 lead with nine minutes to play in the half. The Hawks went up by nine points with under five to play, but couldn't pull away as Mansfield went into the break trailing by just four points at 35-31.
DeRichie scored on Mansfield's opening possession in the second half to cut the IUP lead to two points, but that would be the closest the Mountaineers could get to pulling off the upset.
Mansfield is back in action tomorrow afternoon when Seton Hill visits Decker Gymnasium for another PSAC crossover tilt.
