Taylor Throws Complete Game 9-inning Two-Hitter in 5-0 Win over Lock Haven – Hillson Two Wins Shy of 800
LOCK HAVEN –
Quin Taylor went Bob Dylan at Lock Haven Tuesday afternoon.
The PA system at Foundation Field didn't play Dylan's iconic 1967 song
Quinn the Eskimo but the lyics of
Come all without, come all within, you'll not see nothing like the Mighty Quin were being sung all afternoon on the mound by Taylor.
Quin Taylor threw a complete-game, 9-inning, two-hitter to lead Mansfield to a 5-0 win over Lock Haven in a PSAC interdivisional matchup Tuesday afternoon at Foundation Field.
Taylor was magnificent all afternoon, throwing just 90 pitches on the day while limiting the Bald Eagles to singles in the first and second innings as he fired a no-hitter over the last seven innings of the contest. The junior righty struck out six batters and walked just one while facing 30 batters – three over the minimum.
Mansfield scored the game's first run when
Matt Fisher led off the second inning with a single and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Fisher later scored on
Stanton Tentnowski's fielder's choice.
The Mountaineers added three more runs in the top of the fourth when Fisher singled with one out and moved to second on a single by
Anthony Renz. Tentnowski followed with a single to load the bases before
Jon Taddeo lifted a sac fly to score Fisher.
Conor Thompson then singled to center to drive in the second run of the inning before
Seth Tressler delivered the Mountaineers fifth single of the inning to plate Tentnowski for a 4-0 lead.
Mansfield increased its lead to 5-0 with a solo run in the sixth on Thompson's second RBI single of the day.
The Mountaineers pounded out 13 hits off four Bald Eagle pitchers with Renz, who has seven hits in his last 12 at-bats, leading the offense rapping out three hits in five at-bats on the afternoon. Thompson went 2-4 with two RBI's while Tressler, Fisher and Tentnowski had two hits each.
Taylor, who's longest previous outing this season was 5.1 innings, improves to 3-3 overall.
Dakota Roof and Ryan Henritzy had Lock Haven's two hits.
The win was the 798th in head coach
Harry Hillson's 27 years at the helm of the Mountaineer program, leaving him two wins shy of becoming just the third collegiate baseball coach in Pennsylvania history to reach the 800 win milestone.
Mansfield extends its winning streak to four straight, its second longest of the season.
The Mountaineers will host PSAC East frontrunner Millersville in a key divisional doubleheader this Friday afternoon at Shaute Field.
