Fisher's home run caps five-run rally in eighth to lead Mansfield to 6-4 win over Gannon
MANSFIELD – In a day filled with improbabilities,
Matt Fisher drilled a two-run home run in the bottom eighth inning to cap off a five-run rally and lead Mansfield to a 6-4 win over Gannon Saturday afternoon.
Mansfield was supposed to play Gannon in a doubleheader but wet conditions in the outfield at Shaute Field led to a decision to play just one nine-inning game at Kelly Field in downtown Mansfield.
The game featured an early innings pitching duel Mansfield's
Joe Candelmo and Gannon's Matt Tobin.
The Mountaineers got the game's first run when senior
Joey Andrews reached on an error to open the bottom half of second inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then went to third on a sac bunt by Fisher. Andrews scored one batter later when
Anthony Renz lifted a sac fly to right field.
Gannon scored twice in the top of the fifth when Nico Baldelli led off the inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Bradley. The Golden Knights got their other run of the inning on a single by Jared Wiesen.
Mansfield got its first hit of the game off Tobin on a single by
Conor Thompson with two outs in the fifth but couldn't score.
Gannon scored a single run in the top of the seventh and got one more in the top of the eighth to increase the lead to 4-1 before Candelmo was relieved by
Joey Zuniga.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mitch Iseneker led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by
Conor Thompson. Seth Tresssler followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Iseneker. Thompson then scored on a fielding error to cut the advantage to 4-3.
Joey Andrews plated the tying run on a fielder's choice before Fisher blasted a two-out, two-run home run over the left center field fence for what proved to be the game winning runs.
Candelmo, who hasn't walked a batter in 47 innings this season, struck out eight and walked none over the first seven innings before being relieved by Zuniga.
Zungia was perfect over the final two innings, striking out two to improve to 2-2 on the season. Thompson went 2-2 to lead the offense.
Tobin allowed just one hit over the first seven innings while striking out three. He was relieved by Matt Wilwohl with Ryan Katelan taking the loss.
The game proved to be a measure of revenge for the Mountaineers who took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to lose 5-4 to Gannon in the first game of a doubleheader in Erie yesterday.
Mansfield improves to 13-17 overall and host Penn College in a doubleheader Sunday.
