FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: West Chester Edges Mounties 2-1 in Nightcap to Sweep Doubleheader

WEST CHESTER – Defending National Champion West Chester scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to come away with a 2-1 victory over Mansfield to sweep Friday's PSAC East doubleheader at Serpico Stadium. The Golden Ram's Joe Gunkel pitched a complete game shutout in the opener to lead West Chester to a 9-0 win.

West Chester improves to 15-8-1 on the season while Mansfield falls to 9-10 overall.

In the opener, the Mountaineers struggled to get anything going offensively, totaling just three hits in the game.

Gunkle fanned eight batters without issuing a single base on balls to earn his fourth win of the season.

In the nightcap, West Chester struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Tyler Coleman put and RBI single through the right side to bring home Nick Bonadies to take a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Joey Andrews reached on a two-out single through the right side then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Matt Fisher's RBI single up the middle plated Andrews and knotted the game at one run apiece.

Junior Mitchell Iseneker reached base on a lead-off single in the top of the seventh before moving into scoring position on a Taddeo sacrifice bunt. Iseneker advanced to third on a groundout to the shortstop, but the Mounties were unable to bring in the go-ahead run.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Rams' Coleman lined a lead-off single to left field to put a runner aboard. Sophomore Jeremy Mapstone came on to pitch in relief for the Mounties were he forced back-to-back groundouts, but the West Chester base runner was able to advance all the way to third. The Rams drew a walk and took a hit by pitch to load the bases before winning the game on a wild pitch.

Fred Breidenbach earned the complete game victory for the Rams after allowing four hits and fanning five batters.

Mansfield starting pitcher Joel Worthington had an impressive outing, scattering six hits and striking out three batters in 6.0 innings of work. It marked Worthington's longest outing since pitching a complete game three-hitter in a win over Kutztown during the 2011 season.

The Mountaineers complete the series by hosting West Chester on Saturday at Shaute Field for a 1 p.m. start.
