FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Kutztown Walks Off in Nightcap to Take Two from Mounties
KUTZTOWN – Kutztown came away with a pair of wins over Mansfield in the PSAC East opener for both teams as the Golden Bears won 5-2 in the opener before Matt Albaugh's walk-off RBI single gave his team the 3-2 win in the nightcap.
Mansfield falls to 7-6 on the season while Kutztown improves to 10-4 with Saturday's sweep.
In the opener, Kutztown opened the scoring early by hanging four runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The Bear's Ricky Gorrell started the inning by reaching on a throwing error before Kyle Stoudt drew a one-out walk two batters later to put runners at first and second. Gorrell, Carson Baker, Matt Albaugh and Travis Kreitz all scored unearned runs to put Kutztown up 4-0.
Mountaineer left fielder
Max Miller led-off the top of the third with a solo shot over the left field fence to cut Mansfield's deficit to 4-1. It marked Miller's first homer at Mansfield and is the Mounties' second of the season.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Gorrell, who reach on a one-out double, was plated by a Stoudt RBI double to left field to make it a 5-1 ball game.
Mansfield recorded hits in each of the last three innings, but was unable to bring home a run as the Mounties took the opening loss.
Starting pitcher
Danny Brown, who was chased from the game in the first inning took the loss on the mound.
Quin Taylor pitched 5.1 innings in relief for Mansfield where he struck out three and allowed one earned run.
The Bear's Jason Henderson earned his third win of the season after pitching 5.0 innings while scattering six hits and fanning a career-high eight batters.
Junior
Mitchell Iseneker went 3-for-3 at the plate for MU.
After two scoreless innings to open the nightcap, Mansfield got on the board first with
Anthony Renz scoring after
Joey Andrews grounded into a double play. Renz started the inning with a lead-off double to center field.
However, KU answered back in the bottom half of the frame when Todd Rubendall scored on an RBI single by Albaugh to knot the game at 1-1.
Kutztown took the lead with Brandon Martinez's one-run homer to lead-off the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Tressler was hit by a pitch and
Brandon Miller and
Matt Fisher both hit safely to load the bases for the Mounties. Tressler scored the tying run when
Conor Thompson grounded into a double play.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Mansfield threatened again with runners in scoring position, but the Bears got out of the jam to keep the game tied at 2-2.
Stoudt plated the go-ahead run in Brett Hauck from third to earn the walk-off win and complete the sweep.
Jordan Gottshall earned the win in relief for Kutztown after pitching one inning and giving up a pair of hits. Jonathan Earnest took the loss for Mansfield after two earned runs in 4.0 innings of work.
Senior
Matt Fisher was 2-for-2 in the game for Mansfield.
The Mountaineers host Kuztown at Shaute Field in their home opener Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
