BLOOMSBURG – The Mansfield women's basketball team gave a tough Bloomsburg squad a battle on the road Wednesday night, but the Huskies held on for a 63-51 PSAC Eastern division win.

Junior Jena Matter led the Mountaineers with 13 points and eight boards in the contest. Matter connected on five-of-seven attempts from the floor.

Sophomore Alyssa DeRichie added 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Sophomore Megan McSwain and freshman Katie Yale each came off the bench to score eight and seven points respectively.

Freshman Katie Fitzpatrick was one of three Mountaineers to grab eight boards in the game.

Bloomsburg (19-5, 15-5 PSAC) was led by Lauren Ellis who recorded a double-double with 14 points and rebounds in the win. Dane Wieller and Jocelyn Force each added 10 points.

Mansfield (5-19, 3-17 PSAC) held a 42-38 rebounding advantage over the Huskies.

The Mountaineers were solid from the free throw line, hitting 22-of-31 free throw attempts. Mansfield has hit 20 or more free throws in eight different games this season.

Bloomsburg, who received 23 votes in the latest USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll, opened the game with eight straight points before holding a 12-3 lead just over four minutes into the game. The Huskies extended their lead into double digits three different times in the first half, but never led by more than 11 points.

Trailing 27-18 with just over five minutes to play in the half, Mansfield used an 11-2 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to tie the game at 29-29.
The Huskies took a 33-30 advantage into halftime.

A Julia Stevenson lay-up to open the second half brought the Mounties within a point at 33-32, but Bloomsburg scored eight unanswered to take a nine-point lead with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game.

The Mountaineers closed within six points on a Matter lay-up with 7:13 to play, but couldn't pull any closer with a shortened bench.

Bloomsburg's 12-point winning advantage was its biggest lead of the contest.

Mansfield returns to Decker Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 23 to host Millersville for senior day.
