West Chester Pulls Away Late in 84-75 Win over Mansfield
MANSFIELD –
Jena Matter and
Katie Fitzpatrick each recorded double-doubles and Mansfield had five players score it double-figures, but West Chester held on for a 84-75 win over the Mountaineers in a PSAC East contest Saturday afternoon on First Citizens Community Bank Court at Decker Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Mansfield (0-4, 0-2 PSAC East) used a 9-0 run on three straight 3-pointers by freshman
Maria Kelleher to take a 15-6 lead seven minutes into the game and extended that lead to 25-14 advantage with just over eight minutes to go on a 3-pointer by freshman
Kayla Allen.
The Mountaineers still held a ten point lead at 40-30 on a layup and ensuing free by Fitzpatrick with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
But West Chester (3-2, 2-0 PSAC East) closed out the half on a 14-0 run to take a 44-40 lead into intermission.
West Chester extend the lead to as much as 56-47 on a pair of free throws by Anna Kuntz four minutes into the second half before Mansfield used a an 8-0 run to close to 56-55 on a
Jena Matter layup midway through the half.
West Chester held a 72-68 advantage with just over three minutes remaining and connected on 9-of-11 free throws over the final 2:20 to hold on for the win.
Mansfield had its most balanced attack of the season with five players scoring in double figures. Matter and Fitzpatrick each scored a team-high 15 points and both recorded double-doubles with 14 and 13 rebounds respectively.
Mansfield held a decisive 55-37 rebounding advantage while West Chester made 25 free throws to Mansfield's 15.
Megan McSwain and Kelleher scored 12 points apiece with all of Kelleher's points coming off 3-pointers.
Alyssa DeRichie added 10 points and dished out five assists.
Brittany Sicinski scored a game-high 20 points to lead West Chester with Dallas Ely adding 18 points. Anna Kuntz had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
