Mounties Lead Early in Exhibition Loss to UB
BUFFALO, NY – Mansfield jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the game before turnovers and depth took a toll as the Mountaineers dropped a 94-50 preseason exhibition game at NCAA Division I University of Buffalo Tuesday night.
Mansfield took a 4-0 lead on a pair of free throws by sophomore
Katie Fitzpatrick and extended the margin to 14-4 when junior
Alyssa DeRichie drained a 3-pointer six minutes into the game.
The Mountaineers held a 17-7 advantage after senior
Jena Matter hit a jumper at the midway point of the first half.
But it would be all Buffalo from there out as the Bulls went on a 24-0 run taking a 31-17 lead on a layup by Mackenzie Loesing with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Mansfield tailed 51-29 at halftime and had three players, Matter, Fitzpatrick and DeRichie in foul trouble with three each.
The Mountaineers turned the ball over 30 times and shot 29% from the floor.
Mansfield held its own on the boards, pulling down 40 rebounds including 17 off the offensive glass.
Buffalo took 33 3-pointers connecting on eight of them.
DeRichie led Mansfield with 14 points while Mater had 12 points along with eight rebounds. Fitzpatrick just missed a double-double with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Megan McSwain added eight points.
Mackenzie Loesing topped Buffalo with a game-high 20 points.
Mansfield will open the 2013-14 season when the Mountaineers host Merrimack on Nov. 9.
