Cheyney upsets Mountie women 52-45
MANSFIELD – Cheyney dominated the offensive rebounds and forced 30 turnovers to upset Mansfield 52-45 in a PSAC East contest Saturday afternoon in Decker Gymnasium.
Mansfield raced out to a 5-0 lead and led 13-7 on a layup by
Katie Fitzpatrick at the midway point of the first half. But Cheyney rallied, going on a 7-0 run to take a 14-13 led four minutes later.
The two teams went back and forth in retaking the lead until Cheyney went on a 5-1 run over the last two minutes of the first half for a 22-18 lead.
Mansfield came out strong in the second half going on a 5-0 run on a 3-pointer by
Alyssa DeRichie and jumper by Fitzpatrick to retake the lead 23-22 ninety seconds into the second half.
But Cheyney rallied with a 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 33-23 lead on a jumper by Kyra Hines-Allen with 15:02 to play.
Mansfield would make several runs and pulled to 50-45 on a jumper by
Megan McSwain with 31 seconds left but could pull no closer.
Cheyney dominated the offense boards 20-12 and scoring 24 points in the paint. The Wolves also used a full-court press to force 30 Mountaineer turnovers that resulted in 19 points for the Wolves.
Freshman
Katie Fitzpatrick led the Mountaineers with 10 points and a season-high six steals before fouling out late in the game.
Megan McSwain come off the bench to score nine points.
Lachelle Miller and Tamara Russell each scored 11 points to lead Cheyney.
Mansfield travels to Kutztown this Wednesday.
