FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Mounties Stun No. 3 Bloomsburg in Thrilling 4-2 Victory
MANSFIELD –
Taryn Schawillie scored two goals and keeper
Kristie Rollman recorded 13 saves to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to a thrilling 4-2 upset over No.3 Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Field.
It marks the Mountaineers first win over Bloomsburg in 34 years. Mansfield's last victory over the Huskies came in a 3-1 decision in 1978.
Mansfield also snaps a seven-game losing streak that dated back to Sept. 11.
Schawillie put the Mounties on the scoreboard first when she took a
Lacey Croasdale cross in front of goal and placed it past the keeper. Minutes later,
Kristyn Grunza took a
Brianna Velepec pass off a corner and found the back of goal to put Mansfield up 2-0.
With a two-goal halftime lead, the Mountaineers were unyielding as Schawillie recorded her second goal of the game and ninth of the season in the opening seconds of the second half via a
Kayla Grunza assist. Mansfield's offense continued to keep the pressure on the Huskies throughout the second half, forcing a Bloomsburg defender to deflect the ball into the cage to give the Mounties a 4-0 advantage with 30 minutes to play.
The Huskies wouldn't go away quietly though, as Brooke Simonovich and Brittany Matthews each scored goals in the 42
nd and 45
th minutes respectively to cut the Mansfield lead to two goals. However, it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield came away with the stunning upset.
Bloomsburg held a 22-11 shot advantage and a 14-4 penalty corner advantage in the contest.
Schawillie accounted for seven of Mansfield's 11 shots with five going on goal.
Rollman had a solid outing in goal for the Mountaineers, holding a shutout for the first 42 minutes of the game and recording seven saves in the first half and six in the second. The junior also came up with a huge save on a Bloomsburg penalty swipe attempt in the 58th minute.
Mansfield travels to play at Mercyhurst on Wednesday, Oct. 3 in PSAC West action before hosting a three-game home stand against IUP, Seton Hill and Houghton.
