Field Hockey Rolls Past S. Connecticut St. 7-2

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Juniors Brianna Velepec and Taryn Schawillie and senior Kristyn Grunza each recorded two goals apiece to lead the Mountaineers to a 7-2 victory over Southern Connecticut State (0-2, 0-0 NE-10) Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Mansfield (2-0, 0-0 PSAC West) sweeps their competition at the St. Michael's DoubleTree Classic after defeating St. Michael's College 4-2 yesterday afternoon.
 
It marks the second straight year that the Mountaineers have led off their season with victories over St. Michael's and S. Connecticut St.
 
Schawillie put the Mountaineers on the board first when she placed a loose ball into goal in the 23rd minute of the first half. The goal was Schawillie's first of the season.
 
S. Connecticut St. answered four minutes later when freshman Kayla Quinn (Sutton, Mass./Holy Name) scored the equalizer.
 
Mansfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead after Grunza hit a hard ball past the keeper from the top of the circle in the 29th minute and sophomore Lacey Croasdale backhanded a score in front of goal in the 32nd minute.
 
The scoring barrage continued in the second half when Velepec scored off of a deflection in the 43rd minute and Grunza placed a Talena Truitt penalty corner pass around the keeper in the 48th minute.
 
The Owls recorded their second goal of the day in the 56th minute before Velepec and Schawillie added insurance goals in the 66th and 69th minutes respectively.
 
Junior Sarah Zwick, who led the Mounties last season with five defensive saves, recorded a defensive save in the 53rd minute.
 
Senior keeper Jamie Twist earned the win after getting the start and playing 42 minutes in goal. Twist recorded five saves while allowing one goal.
 
Velepec recorded four shots with three on goal. Sunday's two-goal performance was Velepec's first multi-goal game of her career.
 
Mansfield's seven goals are the most since an 8-3 victory over Seton Hill in 2009.
 
Mansfield returns home to host Kutztown in its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8
