Mansfield Wins 4-2 in Season Opener Against St. Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Kristyn Grunza recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team (1-0, 0-0 PSAC West) to a 4-2 victory over St. Michael's College (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) in the Mountaineers season opener.
 
Mansfield got on the board first after Grunza dribbled down the field and placed the shot in the right side of the cage from 10 yards out in the 15th minute.
 
St. Michael's recorded the equalizer in the 23rd minute to knot the game at one score apiece. Both defenses held strong as the 1-1 tie carried into halftime.
 
The Mountaineer offense kicked it up a notch in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to lead 4-1 over the Purple Knights. Mansfield got goals from Brianna Velepec in the 47th minute, Kristy Tutorow in the 52nd and Lacey Croasdale in the 57th.
 
St. Michael's recorded a goal in the 57th minute to cut the Mountaineer lead to two goals, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Mansfield came away with the victory.

Junior Kristie Rollman earned the win in goal for the Mountaineers after recording 12 saves.

Senior Hali Roy and sophomore Louise Gibbs each recorded goals for St. Michael's.
 
Today's win marks the second consecutive season opening victory for the Mountaineers after defeating Southern Connecticut State 5-2 in 2011.
 
Mansfield is back in action tomorrow at 1:30 when it faces Southern Connecticut State in the final Game of the St. Michael's DoubleTree Classic.
