MANSFIELD – Senior pitcher Andy Young tossed a complete game shutout to lift Mansfield (9-25, 2-10 PSAC East) past Millersville (19-16, 7-10 PSAC East) 6-0 in the nightcap of a PSAC East doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Shaute Field. The Mounties dropped the opener 4-0.

In game one, freshman Stephen Stopper recorded the first hit of the contest in the bottom of the second inning with a one out single up the middle. However, the Mountaineers failed to capitalize and left the runner stranded.

Freshman Jeremy Mapstone hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the third and advanced all the way to third after a Connor Thompson sacrifice bunt and a Dylan Woodworth ground out. However, the Mounties failed once again to bring the runner home as the game remained knotted in a scoreless tie.

Mapstone's hit proved to be the Mountaineer's last of the ball game as Millersville used a one-run fourth and a three-run seventh to take the opener.

The Marauder's Brian Black went the distance pitching seven innings of shutout ball, giving up just two hits while issuing two walks to earn his first win of the season. Black struck out four in the winning effort.

Mansfield starting pitcher Joe Candelmo was perfect through the first three innings and gave up just four hits through six, but Millersville got the better of him in the seventh as Junior Curtis Harpester came into relieve the lefty. Candelmo surrendered seven hits and four earned runs through 6.0 innings on the bump while striking out five batters.

In the nightcap, both sides were scoreless through two frames until junior Conor Thompson belted a solo shot over the centerfield fence in the third to put Mansfield on top.

Currently, Thompson leads the Mounties in home runs on the season with four.

The Mountaineers threatened with runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth after Jon Moser walked and Brian Milliman doubled down the left field line. Moser scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat to give Mansfield the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Moser ignited a four-run inning when he hit his first home run of the season over the fence in left-center field. Senior Brian Milliman, who reached on a one-out single, was plated via an RBI groundout by Jeremy Mapstone.

After taking a base on balls, Conor Thompson reached home on a Dylan Woodworth RBI single to left field. Thompson later scored on a throwing error by the catcher to put Mansfield up 6-0.

Andy Young secured the shutout victory after blanking Millersville in the top of the seventh.

Young, who earned his third win of the season, allowed just three hits and two walks on the day while striking out six batters. The complete game shutout is Young's career first and the first since Eric Rosenberger did the same in a 2-0 win over East Stroudsburg University on April 3, 2011.

Milliman and Jon Taddeo each recorded two hits and a run in the winning effort while Woodworth recorded two hits and an RBI.

Millersville's Tim Mayza took the loss after giving up two earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched.

Mansfield travels to Wilmington University (DE) on Wednesday, April 11 for a non-conference doubleheader.
