MANSFIELD – Freshman
Anthony Renz homered and doubled in the nightcap but it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield dropped a PSAC East doubleheader to visiting Kutztown Friday, losing the first game 5-0 in 10 innings before suffering a 7-5 setback in the second game.
In the nightcap, Kutztown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Mansfield came right back scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run over the right centerfield fence by Renz.
Kutztown took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the third with Mansfield tying the game with a run when Renz doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by
Jon Taddeo.
Kutztown responded with three runs in the top of the fourth, two of them coming off a home run by Travis Kreitz for a 6-3 lead.
The Golden Bears got another run in the top of the fifth to take what felt like an insurmountable 7-3 but the pesky Mounties kept fighting back scoring s run in the bottom of the fifth to pull to 7-4 and added another run on a RBI single by
Matt Fisher in the seventh before stranding the would-be tying runs on second and third with two outs.
Renz had two of Mansfield's nine hits in the game and drove in two runs. Taddeo and Fisher each added an RBI.
Kutztown got two hits apiece from Kyle Stoudt, Shayne Houck, Travis Kreitz, Sean McCormick and Brad Stoudt.
Tom Neely went 4.2 innings to pick up the win while
Andy Young went the distance in absorbing the loss.
In the opener, Mansfield's
Joe Candelmo and Kutztown's Dominick Ruscitti hooked up in a scoreless pitching duel that went deep into extra innings before Kutztown broke the ice with five runs in the top of the 10th inning.
Candelmo allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out four over the first 7.2 innings of the game before being relieved by
Joel Worthington.
Worthington retired eight of the first 10 batters he faced before Kutztown's Brett Hauck laid down a one out bunt single in the top of the 10th. Shayne Houck then drilled a two-run home run over the right centerfield fence for a 2-0 lead.
Kutztown (30-14, 13-9 PSAC East) would add three more runs to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the 10th inning. Mansfield didn't go away easily loading the bases in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't push a run across.
Ruscitti allowed just four hits over nine inning while striking out six and walking none to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Mansfield falls to 13-34 overall and 5-17 in PSAC East play.
The Mountaineers end the 2012 season with a doubleheader at Kutztown on Saturday.
