Mounties Split Doubleheader with UMass Lowell

FLEMINGTON, NJ – The Mansfield University baseball team split a pair of games against UMass Lowell Sunday afternoon in Flemington, NJ. The Mounties ended a three-game losing skid with an 8-4 win in the opener before falling 10-1 in the nightcap.

Mansfield put one on the board early as junior Dylan Woodworth hit a lead-off home run over the right field fence in the top of the first. Junior Stephen Stopper hit a two-out RBI single to bring home Matt Fisher, who reached on a double, to put the Mountaineers up 2-0.

After a lead-off double by Woodworth in the third, Fisher and Milliman each added doubles to give Mansfield a 4-0 lead over the River Hawks.

Woodworth, Fisher and Milliman each recorded two hits and two runs a piece in the contest.

Lowell answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to cut the Mountaineer lead to just one run.

Senior Brian Milliman hit his first home run of the season with a one run opposite field round-tripper in the fifth to give Mansfield the 5-3 advantage.

Junior Conor Thompson gave the Mountaineers a comfortable lead in the eighth, blasting a three-run homer over the right field fence scoring Milliman and Stopper.
Lowell added a run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth but it wouldn't be enough as Mansfield came away with the win.

Junior Eric Conway earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings in relief while allowing just one hit and striking out three batters. Senior Mike Martin pitched the opening 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while recording four strikeouts.

Lowell's Mike Calzetta was saddles with the loss after giving up nine hits and five earned runs in six innings on the mound.

Freshman Jeremy Mapstone went two-for-four at the dish.

In the finale, Lowell struck first putting a run on the board in the bottom of the first before freshman Jordan Miller evened the score with an RBI double to bring home Jon Moser in the top of the second.

The Mountaineers were held to just two hits in the remainder of the game while the River Hawks scored nine more runs to win the final match-up of the weekend.

Lowell's Cam Kneeland earned the win giving up three hits in four innings.

Mansfield kicks-off their 2012 Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Findlay on March 9.
